Newey and Horner
Adrian Newey says Christian Horner did not fully understand the pain and frustration he felt during Red Bull’s difficult 2014 season with Renault engines, and he said the two men still remain friends. Newey said he has not read Horner’s memoir, Drive, yet, but he pushed back on the picture the book paints of that period. He said he and Horner still have a personal bond, pointing out that he is godfather to Horner’s daughter, Olivia. That family tie underlines how close their relationship has stayed even after Newey left Red Bull in 2024.
Ferrari, Red Bull and 2014
Newey said he was in conversation about leaving Red Bull in 2014, but he stayed after turning down Ferrari’s offer. He said a chassis designer can accept a poor year from a power-unit supplier only if the supplier seems willing to fix the problem, and he said Red Bull’s engine issues did not improve until the team switched to Honda in 2019.
Aston Martin parallels
Newey said there are parallels between Aston Martin’s current rebuild and Red Bull’s early years after buying Jaguar in 2005.
