Alonso, Stroll to start last after FIA grid penalties

Alonso penalty
Fernando Alonso will start at the back of the grid at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after the FIA confirmed engine-related penalties for both Aston Martin cars. The governing body said Aston Martin went beyond its allotted Honda engine components for Alonso and Lance Stroll, and the penalties pushed both drivers to the rear in Baku. Alonso drew a 25-place penalty, tied to a fifth internal combustion engine, a fifth turbocharger and a ninth power unit ancillary component. The size of the penalty meant Alonso automatically dropped to the back of the field. Alonso had accounted for all three of Aston Martin’s points in 2026 before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Stroll penalty
Stroll received a 20-place grid penalty of his own, with the FIA linking it to a sixth turbocharger, a seventh energy store unit, a sixth control electronics unit and an eighth power unit ancillary component. That brought the combined Aston Martin penalties to 45 places. Because penalties of more than 15 places send a driver to the back of the grid, Stroll also was set to start from the rear in Baku.
