The new standard
The AMA Supercross series is set to tighten its sound rules, lowering the maximum level for professional off-road motorcycle racing from 112 dB to 109 dB. The new 109 dB limit will apply to all bikes subject to sound testing, with penalties for noncompliance. It will take effect at the season opener at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The change is intended to create a single competition benchmark for motorcycle noise.
Manufacturer support
The sound change was developed with manufacturers, the SMX League, AMA Pro Racing and the American Motorcyclist Association. League and manufacturer officials said the lower limit should improve consistency for teams. They also said the rule should support global alignment. The list of manufacturers supporting the move includes KTM, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Ducati and Triumph. All manufacturers competing in SMX League events have committed to producing motorcycles that meet the new limit.
Event and broadcast
League and manufacturer officials also pointed to practical benefits for event operations and broadcasts. The rule change is intended to help preserve riding areas, venues and community access. The support from the major manufacturers gives the policy a clearer path forward, and the commitment from all manufacturers competing in SMX League events to produce motorcycles that meet the new limit reinforces the series’ direction.
