Marquez brothers qualifying
Marc Marquez set the pace in wet qualifying at Phillip Island, crashed on his opening Q2 lap and still took pole position for the Australian Grand Prix with a 1 minute, 34.203-second lap. Alex Marquez followed in second, 1.494 seconds back. Johann Zarco took third after advancing from Q1, and Jorge Martin claimed fourth.
The rest of the top 10 featured Jack Miller in fifth, Raul Fernandez in sixth, Pedro Acosta in seventh, Fabio Di Giannantonio in eighth and Marco Bezzecchi in ninth. That order set the front of the grid before the rest of the weekend was disrupted by weather.
Marquez Sprint podium
Marc Marquez then backed up his pole with a win in Saturday’s 13-lap Sprint, beating Alex Marquez by 0.323 seconds in a tight duel at the front. Fabio Di Giannantonio finished third to complete a Ducati sweep of the podium, with Marco Bezzecchi fourth and Pedro Acosta fifth.
The Sprint also reshaped the weekend’s story for Martin. He crashed out on lap eight and was ruled out of Sunday’s race, ending his chance to build on the fourth place he had earned in qualifying.
Phillip Island cancellation
The premier-class Australian Grand Prix was then cancelled because poor visibility and bad weather stopped the medical helicopter from flying, and Moto2 and Moto3 were also called off. The decision brought the weekend to an abrupt end and left the grid without the chance to race on Sunday. Honda’s factory team also finished the weekend without a rider on the grid after Joan Mir withdrew for health reasons and Luca Marini missed the rest of the weekend because of illness.
The abandonment left the championship picture unchanged at the front, with Marc Marquez on 365 points, Martin on 355 and Bezzecchi on 315 after the main race was cancelled. Phillip Island also closed a chapter for the series, since it hosted its final MotoGP weekend before the championship moves to Adelaide in 2027. Miller said it was his final home MotoGP start, and he later joined the farewell parade lap for fans who stayed through the weather.
