Brady Bacon knows how to bring it home. The USAC Sprint Car legend won a race at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway two weeks ago, leaving him just one victory away from tying Dave Darland’s all-time mark of 62 career wins. The 35-year-old will attempt to reach the record on Thursday at The Dirt Track at IMS. Bacon isn’t a regular racer in the USAC Sprint Car series, but we’re still three months out from Nationals, leaving him plenty of time to surpass Darland’s record.
Bacon has captured 61 victories in 539 races, while Darland reached 62 in 850 events. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native, remains at the top of his game. He is a four-time champion (2014, 2016, 2020, and 2021) and has finished second each of the past three years.
Levi Jones is the only driver in history with more championships, winning five from 2005 to 2011. Bacon has three wins this season and currently sits in 12th place in the AMSOIL National Sprint Car standings with 558 points.
Mastery at Knoxville
Bacon put himself in this position with some fantastic driving at the Knoxville Raceway on May 30. He was momentarily passed on Lap 17 by Briggs Danner to fall to third place, but responded two laps later to retake second.
He then set his sights on leader Chase Stockton, passing him between turns three and four, with six laps remaining. The veteran held off the hard-charging Stockton and Danner the rest of the way to secure his familiar place atop the podium. Bacon said he knew his car was good enough to win, and once he was successfully able to maneuver around lapped traffic, the victory was his.
The Competition
While Bacon will likely be the first to surpass Darland for the all-time wins lead, he’s not alone near the top of the leaderboard. Justin Grant, also 35 years old, has 56 career wins after securing victories at Ocala Speedway on February 12 and Lawrenceburg Speedway on April 12. Grant won the Sprint Car championship in 2022 and 2023 before finishing ninth last year. He is currently second in the standings behind Kyle Cummins, proving that Grant remains at the top of his game.
Logan Seavey won’t be challenging the all-time wins record for a while, but he’s certainly someone to keep an eye on. The 28-year-old won the Sprint Car championship last year and has amassed 27 career victories. Seavey sits in fourth place this season and is standing out as a future star in the sport. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we find Bacon, a seasoned campaigner in sprint cars, registering at least five victories in each of the past six seasons. If he reaches that mark again in 2025, Bacon will sit alone atop the list of all-time winningest AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car racers.
