Waltrip’s gift
Darrell Waltrip surprised Joey Logano with a stock car at a Waltrip Brothers’ Champions Dinner event in Nashville, ahead of Sunday’s Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, the penultimate race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. Waltrip handed over the No. 95 Mercury Cyclone, and Logano said he was “absolutely speechless” after getting it. He had been storing the car for about nine to 10 months, keeping it in his shop and also in the back of his Ram truck because he thought it looked cool. The car now belongs to Logano outright, and he said he plans to preserve it and keep it in the family.
Car history runs deep
The car’s history stretches back decades. It began as a 1967 Ford Fairlane, then Mario Andretti drove it to victory in the 1967 Daytona 500. Holman-Moody later converted it into a 1969 Mercury. Waltrip later bought the car for $12,500 and rebuilt it before using it in his first Cup Series race at Talladega in 1972. Waltrip is a NASCAR Hall of Famer with 84 Cup Series wins and three championships. The car links Andretti, Holman-Moody and Waltrip’s first Cup Series start before reaching Logano. It has passed through several forms and eras of the sport before landing in his hands.
