Lando Norris criticized after Lance Stroll jab in nightclub footage

Norris backlash

McLaren driver Lando Norris faced fresh criticism after nightclub footage from after the Singapore Grand Prix showed him joking with Haas driver Oliver Bearman and appearing to take a swipe at Lance Stroll. In the clip, a sign read, “to the best F1 driver,” and Norris pointed to Bearman before shouting, “Where’s Lance? Where’s Lance?” The remark quickly spread online and many fans read it as a sarcastic jab at Stroll. Some Formula One followers called the comments poor sportsmanship. Others dismissed the moment as harmless banter. The reaction added to the scrutiny around Norris, who has drawn attention for his on-track conduct and his responses when questioned about it afterward.

Singapore collision

The nightclub video landed after Norris also drew attention for a collision with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in the sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix. The pair were fighting for fourth place on the final lap at Turn 5 when Norris made contact with Piastri, sending the Australian into retirement and dropping Norris to eighth. Stewards did not penalize Norris and said both drivers shared responsibility for the clash. Norris initially defended the move after the contact, then mocked reporters in the media pen and answered Viaplay and Sky Sports Germany questions with sarcasm about the incident and whether he had spoken to Piastri. The sequence turned a team issue into a public talking point, with the crash, the stewards’ decision and Norris’s handling of the aftermath all feeding the scrutiny around him.

McLaren response

McLaren boss Andrea Stella has given a measured but pointed response to the situation. He praised Norris for how he handled the collision and said the team’s conversations about the incident were not finished. Stella also said Norris later accepted that he should never have attempted the move and offered to help Piastri during the race. After the race, Norris said the move on Piastri was a mistake, that he had apologized to the team and that he had let the team down. He promised to do better next time. Stella then drew a line around the issue by saying there was no place for a driver’s ego in the organization, a comment widely taken as aimed at Norris. The combined fallout from the track incident and the nightclub footage has left Norris answering for both his racing and his judgment away from it, with McLaren trying to keep the focus on the team after a week of unwanted attention.
