George Russell no longer focused on stopping Antonelli’s title bid

NXTbets Pro | Published On: October 23, 2026

Russell reflects

George Russell said the 2026 season has tested his character and resilience as he tries to recover his form, and the Mercedes driver has already stepped out of the title fight. Russell said the setbacks that shaped his year have left him out of the 2026 Drivers’ Championship chase, a sharp shift from the way the season began when he won the opener in Australia. He pointed to early-season car incompatibility and reliability problems as major reasons his results slid. Russell also said victories in Austria and Azerbaijan showed progress for him and Mercedes, only for rival teams to close the gap with upgrades later in the year. That left him 102 points behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli with 150 points still available, and it changed the way he views the final stretch. Russell said he is no longer focused on stopping Antonelli from clinching the championship, and he identified this weekend’s United States Grand Prix as the first chance for that to happen.

Antonelli path

Antonelli can clinch the title at the United States Grand Prix if he wins, Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. That math gives the championship race a clear outline, even as Russell’s comments show where his attention has moved. He said he has learned a lot about himself during the season and is proud that he kept fighting through setbacks and poor performances instead of walking away from the challenge. Russell framed the year as a test of more than speed. He described it as a measure of how he handled pressure, frustration and the stretch when the car and the results did not line up with his expectations. Even with the frustration, he did not talk like a driver who has closed the book on the season. He said, “This won’t be my last shot.” The line fit the larger view he offered of his career, which he expects to continue with Mercedes in 2027 and in Formula 1 for many more years.

Marko verdict

Helmut Marko added another blunt assessment of the situation, saying Russell has suffered a “huge mental setback.” Marko also said Russell is no longer Mercedes’ number one driver and said Antonelli has taken over that role. His comments lined up with the way the season has unfolded for Mercedes, but the championship picture shifted as the year moved on and other teams improved. Marko also said Antonelli has won eight races and taken 14 podiums this season, a record that explains why the title conversation has turned toward him. Russell, though, already sounded focused on what comes next rather than on the view from this one difficult season.
