Goodyear chose the tire after a test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Ross Chastain, Ryan Preece and John Hunter Nemechek ran laps for Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota. The new Cup tire features updated construction and a new tread compound. Goodyear said the design is built to handle the track’s layout and the way teams attack it.
The left-side tire stays the same. That side of the package includes the tire used at Chicagoland Speedway and at eight other intermediate tracks this season. The setup gives teams one familiar piece in the package and one new one on the right side, which should put more focus on how crews balance speed and durability at Indianapolis. The Brickyard 400 gives the Cup Series a fresh tire combination, and Goodyear’s move reflects what the test showed on the speedway’s surface and corner profile. The new right-side tire is the clearest change in the weekend plan, and it lands in the most visible race on the schedule at Indianapolis.
O'Reilly Auto Parts tires
The NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series will race on the same tire setup it used at Pocono Raceway. That gives the series a known baseline for the weekend at Indianapolis, even as Goodyear changes the Cup package for the Brickyard 400. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series also will use inner liners at tracks one mile and longer, which keeps that tire plan in line with its rules for this type of track.
Both the Cup Series and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series will have 50-minute practice sessions on Friday afternoon. That gives each series a short but useful window to sort out balance, grip and long-run feel before race day. The shared practice length keeps the weekend moving while still giving teams time to compare notes on the track surface and tire wear. The Cup Series will work with the new right-side tire and the same left-side tire it has already used at multiple intermediate tracks. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series will stay with its Pocono setup. The difference in tire choice gives the two series separate paths through the same venue, with each group working from the package Goodyear chose for its own race conditions.
Truck Series setup
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will race Friday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, and it will do so on the same Goodyear setup it used last weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway. That keeps the Truck Series on familiar ground while the Cup Series and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series handle different tire plans at Indianapolis. The Truck Series package does not change for this stop, which gives teams a carryover option as they move from one event to the next.
The weekend now has three separate tire approaches across the national series. The Cup Series gets the new right-side tire for the Brickyard 400. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series stays on the Pocono tire setup and uses inner liners at tracks one mile and longer. The Truck Series keeps the North Wilkesboro build. Each choice matches the needs of the event and the track on which each series will run. Friday sets the tone with practice for Cup and O'Reilly Auto Parts Series teams, then the Trucks take over Friday night in Indianapolis.
