Sepang tyre wear tests F1 teams as Pirelli picks aggressive compounds for Malaysia

Sepang tyre challenge

Pirelli expects Sepang International Circuit to put tyre life at the center of the weekend when Formula 1 returns to Malaysia. High temperatures, low grip and an abrasive surface should make tyre management one of the toughest jobs on the grid. Formula 1 has not raced at Sepang since 2017, so teams will arrive with limited current data from present-generation cars and tyres. That makes Friday practice a key part of the weekend, because teams will have to learn fast how the compounds behave on a track that punishes them from the opening laps. Several drivers will also be learning the Sepang layout for the first time in Formula 1, which only raises the need for clean running early in the weekend. The expected tyre wear also stands apart from the low-degradation races seen since the summer break, so teams will not be able to lean on the same race patterns they have used in recent rounds. Weather can turn the challenge up another notch. Afternoon thunderstorms, heavy rain, extreme heat and humidity are all possible in Sepang, and each one changes the way the tyres and track surface come together.

Pirelli compound choice

Pirelli has selected the C2, C3 and C4 compounds for the event, and the company says that more aggressive mix is meant to widen strategy options. The goal is also to reduce the gap between one-stop and two-stop races, which should force teams to weigh track position against tyre life from the opening stint. At a circuit that already places a premium on heat control and surface management, the softer end of the range could shape the entire weekend. The C4 tyres are expected to last only one qualifying lap, so teams will need to get performance out of them immediately when the track is at its best. That puts extra pressure on qualifying preparation and on the first timed laps in each session. If the tyres drop off quickly, pit timing will become even more important than usual. A small mistake in stint length or traffic management could undo a race plan fast. Pirelli’s selection points to a weekend built around choice and adaptation rather than one fixed approach, and Sepang’s combination of wear, heat and changing conditions should keep that picture moving from practice through race day.

Driver pit-stop views

The drivers who have already spoken about Sepang expect the race to demand more than simple pace. Oscar Piastri described the circuit as especially tough on tyres, and Kimi Antonelli said the same. Antonelli went further and called the asphalt the roughest he had seen. He also said the heat could force multiple pit stops, which fits the view shared by several drivers that two or three stops could be likely. George Russell said surface overheating could make it harder to follow closely and re-overtake, which would put a premium on clean air and on getting strategy right before traffic becomes a problem. Lando Norris added another layer to the discussion by saying the 2026 cars will face a completely new experience in wet conditions. Antonelli said Sepang’s open surface could make it one of the better places to test the cars in the wet, and that matters with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rain in the forecast mix. Extreme heat and humidity are also part of the picture, so teams and drivers could move from dry running to wet-track work and back again in short order. That combination should make every lap in practice valuable and every pit call under race conditions hard to get exactly right.
