Pedro Acosta underwent successful minor surgery on Tuesday on his right wrist to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, after a problem that had bothered him for nearly a year and flared again during the Dutch MotoGP at Assen. KTM said the operation had originally been planned for the summer break but was moved up.
Acosta retired from Sunday’s race after his wrist went numb and he lost feeling in three fingers on his throttle hand. He was running sixth when he sat up at Turn 1 on lap 13, rode back to the pits and recorded a non-finish. Acosta said the issue likely cost him a chance to finish inside the top six, and KTM said the exit was caused by a physical problem rather than a mechanical failure.
KTM expects the 22-year-old to be fit for the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring on July 10-12, pending a medical check on Thursday. The Assen retirement was his third in the last five grands prix and left him seventh in the championship with 133 points, 60 behind leader Jorge Martin. Acosta has already been confirmed to join Ducati in 2027 alongside Marc Marquez.
Marc Márquez said he is convinced he will be back in the MotoGP fight at Aragon after a difficult Silverstone weekend exposed lingering problems in his right arm and left him 40 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin. Márquez said Silverstone was his worst weekend since shoulder surgery in May, and he believes the extra two weeks of recovery should put him much closer to the front group and in contention in both the Sprint and Sunday race at MotorLand Aragon.
He said he needs to manage his energy more carefully on Fridays after realizing he had pushed too hard at Silverstone, where he was frustrated by what he described as having no control over his right arm. Márquez linked the issue to the seven surgeries on his right shoulder and said he had expected to feel better after the summer break. He also said he must beat the fast Aprilia riders to stay in the title fight, even as Aprilia’s Ai Ogura withdrew from the weekend after a hand injury in training.
Aragon offers Márquez one of his best chances to recover ground. The circuit has brought him eight career wins, including seven in MotoGP, and over the past two years he has taken pole and won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix there. He said the layout suits both his riding style and the Ducati, and Francesco Bagnaia also said he expects to be near the leaders at a track that was special to him for his first premier-class win and first victory with Ducati in 2021.
Yamaha’s new V4 engine suffered unexpected failures at the Sepang pre-season test, forcing a safety-first shutdown of factory running and disrupting the team’s program. An unforeseen fault first appeared on one of Fabio Quartararo’s bikes after his opening-day crash and was followed by a separate engine breakage on Toprak Razgatlioglu’s machine. Yamaha described the problem as something “we never had,” halting Wednesday’s running while engineers investigated, and kept garage doors closed as a precaution.
Engineers initially could not find the cause, but later identified the issue and allowed limited on-track activity, running the V4s with reduced power and rev limits to protect riders and equipment. The team removed long 60-70 lap runs and focused on ergonomics and sprint work. Yamaha intends to bring replacement engines ahead of the next two-day pre-season test at Buriram on February 21-22 to verify fixes and assess whether the imposed limits can be lifted, and warned that ambient temperatures above 30°C may exacerbate the faults.
The engine problems, combined with Quartararo’s crash, intensified scrutiny around the test. Spanish reports that Quartararo has decided not to renew with Yamaha, and instead reached an agreement with Honda, remain unconfirmed. The French rider has publicly denied signing for Honda while acknowledging he is in discussions. Team director Massimo Meregalli said the Sepang interruption was an unexpected delay that pushed some evaluations and contract talks toward the next test rather than changing decisions about Quartararo’s future. Alex Rins, the only factory Yamaha rider present, said the issue appeared under control and still managed his quickest laps of the test.
Ducati and Francesco Bagnaia come home this weekend to a circuit that has remained a happy hunting ground for locals in the 21st Century. However, a Spaniard, Marc Marquez, is looking to add his nation’s haul in Mugello and leads the MotoGP Italy 2025 pre-event odds heading into the weekend. After reading our analysis, check …
