Maverick Viñales withdrew from the US MotoGP at COTA after Free Practice 1 when track medical checks found a surgical screw in his previously operated left shoulder had come loose. Tech3 said the displaced screw and ongoing pain forced his withdrawal; Viñales will return to Europe for a minor procedure, and AS reported the operation was scheduled for the week after the Austin round. The left‑shoulder problem dates to July 2025 and has been linked in reports to Sachsenring qualifying and to a crash at the Italian Grand Prix; Viñales underwent surgery in Italy after that summer injury. Since then he has reported loss of strength and difficulty changing direction, especially when turning left, and his performance has suffered — he completed only five of the final 13 grands prix in 2025, missed eight rounds between the summer incident and the Portuguese round, and has scored just three world championship points since the injury. He entered the season without points from the first two rounds amid reported KTM specification problems, and has been running a different KTM RC16 configuration while managing the shoulder. Over the winter he worked with coach Jorge Lorenzo and took part in a February Sepang test when he believed the shoulder had healed.
Tech3 says Viñales is targeting a return at Jerez (April 24–26). The postponement of the Qatar race gives him an additional recovery window before that weekend. Viñales said he is “worried about my future,” has not ruled out further surgery, and has previously avoided publicly detailing the injury for fear it could lead to being sidelined by KTM and affect his salary.
Bezzecchi Suspended From Czech GP After Marshal Incident
Marco Bezzecchi was suspended from Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix after MotoGP stewards ruled that his conduct during Saturday’s sprint in Brno breached championship regulations and was prejudicial to the interests of the sport. The penalty ended his weekend before the main race.
The incident came after Bezzecchi crashed at Turn 3 while running fifth with fewer than two laps left in the sprint. Marshals were recovering his Aprilia from the gravel when, according to stewards, one marshal may have accidentally twisted the throttle and revved the bike. Stewards said Bezzecchi pushed marshals who were trying to move the motorcycle, and video showed him pushing and slapping a marshal. MotoGP held a stewards hearing on Saturday night and upheld the suspension, while Aprilia said it retained the right to appeal.
Bezzecchi entered Sunday leading Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin by 15 points, after the sprint added five points for Martin. Martin was also set to serve two long-lap penalties from the Balaton Park incident. Bezzecchi said he could not explain why he has been more competitive in Sunday races than in sprint races, noting four wins in eight Sunday races this season but only two sprint podiums and four sprint DNFs.
Moto d’Italia event spotlights Italy’s racing soft power
Italian motorcycle racing and its role in diplomacy were celebrated at the “Moto d’Italia – Culture Beyond the Track” event, where Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani presented Sports Diplomacy Ambassador plaques to Valentino Rossi, Francesco Bagnaia, Marco Bezzecchi, Giacomo Agostini, Max Biaggi, Kiara Fontanesi and Mugello Circuit CEO Paolo Poli. The initiative promoted motorcycling as a symbol of Italian industrial, technological, sporting and cultural excellence, and as a tool to strengthen Italy’s image abroad.
Bezzecchi joined by videoconference after surgery on a fractured collarbone suffered at the Sachsenring the previous weekend. He said he was proud of the appointment, thanked Tajani and said his operation had gone well as he recovered ahead of Silverstone. Bezzecchi also recalled winning at Mugello on an Italian motorbike and carrying the Italian flag on the podium. Rossi said, “It’s satisfying to watch the races today: Italy is at the top with its bikes and riders.”
The gathering brought together figures from the Italian and global motorcycling world, including Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali, FMI president Giovanni Copioli and MotoGP Group CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. Ducati displayed Bagnaia’s Desmosedici GP26, Nicolò Bulega’s WorldSBK-spec Panigale V4 R and the Superleggera V4 Centenario Tricolore. Rivola said the Piaggio Group and its brands, including Vespa, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia, represent Italian spirit worldwide.
Lorenzo Returns as Vinales’ Full-time Coach for 2026 Tests
Jorge Lorenzo has signed on as Maverick Vinales’ performance coach in a full-time return to the MotoGP paddock for the 2026 season, a role the three-time world champion called the “perfect job.” Lorenzo said working seven to nine hours a day with Vinales was “not heavy, it’s a pleasure,” and that the position lets him apply roughly 30 years of motorcycle experience without the on-track risk. Since retiring at the end of 2019, he has hosted a MotoGP podcast, raced in the Porsche Supercup, and worked as a DAZN pundit, and he will accompany Vinales to pre-season tests and through the opening rounds of 2026.
Lorenzo has overseen an intensive winter program designed to rebuild Vinales’ form, beginning at the Sepang test and overhauling the rider’s preparation to push him beyond previous limits. The regimen included road-bike testing at Jerez, figure-of-eight drills and dirt riding in Valencia, deliberate work in wet and slippery conditions, and technical refinements such as throttle control and braking technique. Lorenzo shifted Vinales’ routine away from a fitness-only focus toward tougher practice scenarios and more focused technical work to restore race-to-race consistency.
The intervention responds to a difficult 2025 for Vinales, who rehabbed a shoulder injury sustained at the German Grand Prix, struggled for consistency, and finished 18th in the championship despite having 10 Grand Prix wins and 35 career podiums. Lorenzo said he aims to help Vinales regain the “killer” mentality he remembered from the rider’s youth, arguing that Vinales needs greater mental strength but that physical preparation and mindset improvements could turn him into a genuine contender. Lorenzo has publicly bet with Albert Valera, manager of Pedro Acosta, that Vinales will outscore Acosta across 2026. Acosta finished fourth overall with 12 podiums in 2025. Vinales is out of contract at the end of 2026, and Lorenzo warned the next two to three years could be a final window for a championship push as his renewed form will be watched closely amid rumours of KTM factory-seat reshuffles involving Acosta and Alex Marquez.
