Some reports suggested limited units might have led the squad to save the package for Barcelona, and the weekend will provide immediate feedback on whether the 2026 side-fairing delivers the expected turning gains and helps Ducati regain consistent front-running form.
Joan Mir Sets Sepang Benchmark as Honda Tops Rain-Hit Day 2
Joan Mir topped the second day of the 2026 Sepang MotoGP official test for Honda, setting the fastest lap of the meeting with a 1:56.874 and pushing lap times into the 1:56s for the first time this pre-season. Franco Morbidelli was just 0.109 seconds behind in second for VR46, with Fabio Di Giannantonio completing the top three after an early benchmark run on his factory Ducati. Pedro Acosta and Maverick Viñales put KTM two-deep inside the top five, while Enea Bastianini added a third KTM inside the top 10; Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, Raul Fernandez, and Ai Ogura also finished within the top 10, and Francesco Bagnaia was the best of the factory Ducatis in eighth. Marc Márquez slipped to 15th after topping day one, and on-track incidents, including Alex Márquez’s crash at turn five, reduced meaningful running for some teams. The afternoon rain left only 17 riders classified on the official timesheets.
Yamaha sat out the bulk of Wednesday’s running after engineers found an unresolved engine issue following Fabio Quartararo’s stoppage on Tuesday, a problem compounded by Quartararo’s broken finger from a separate crash. The factory yard remained largely inactive as they investigated whether repairs could be made on-site and assessed the new V4 engine concept. The manufacturer said it would decide on Thursday whether to resume testing. That lost track time was notable given Yamaha’s switch to the V4 architecture for 2026 and the limited running available at Sepang.
A heavy rain shower around 4 pm local time curtailed late dry running and prevented many teams from improving on morning times, locking in Mir’s benchmark. Honda’s technical director, Romano Albesiano, described the squad as “moderately satisfied,” attributing Mir’s pace to a series of marginal gains across the engine, electronics, and chassis. He continued to say that the RC213V’s “real performance” should become clearer on the final day of testing. Aprilia leads riders, constructors & teams after three wins
Aprilia has made a commanding start to the 2026 MotoGP season, emerging as the biggest improver and shifting the championship balance away from Ducati. The RS-GP26’s race pace, Aprilia Racing’s three consecutive grand prix victories — all by Marco Bezzecchi — and the team leading the riders’, constructors’ and teams’ standings have underlined the turnaround; Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola even declared the marque has “the best bike.” Sprint races and qualifying have remained tighter, but Aprilia’s race pace and consistency have quickly made the team a serious championship threat.
Marco Bezzecchi has been the standout performer, leading every lap of the three grands prix he contested and scoring 81 of a possible 111 points through the first three rounds — a 57-point increase on his 2025 tally. That total places him four points clear of Jorge Martin (81 to 77) heading into the Spanish GP at Jerez (April 24–26), although some reports listed Martin as the points leader on 77 after three rounds. Jorge Martin has nonetheless shown strong race form, collecting 59 points across the last two rounds, recording one Sprint win and two second-place finishes. KTM’s Pedro Acosta sits an early third with 60 points, up 44 on 2025, while Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez produced a double rostrum at Buriram and is +35 year‑on‑year; Ai Ogura is +12 despite a mechanical retirement in Austin and a technical problem at COTA that denied what would have been an Aprilia one‑two‑three. Aprilia have taken four of the six races so far when sprints are included.
The early surge has coincided with a notable downturn for Ducati and several established riders. Sources describe Ducati as struggling to mount an immediate response despite recent championship success (Francesco Bagnaia 2022–23, Jorge Martin 2024 and Marc Marquez 2025). Fabio Di Giannantonio is the best-placed Ducati after three rounds in fourth and is +6 on his 2025 tally, while Bagnaia is roughly 50 points down year-on-year. Reigning champion Marc Marquez has lost about 41–42 points after a technical non-score in Thailand and a crash in the COTA Sprint; Alex Marquez’s decline is reported at roughly 58–59 points. With 19 races still to run, the standings can evolve, but Aprilia’s early consistency, the RS-GP26’s rideability and riders’ growing confidence have already reshaped the championship picture.
Di Giannantonio third after wheel-to-wheel with Marquez
Fabio Di Giannantonio’s hard, fair wheel-to-wheel duel with seven-time champion Marc Márquez defined his weekend at the 2026 Brazilian MotoGP, as he emerged third on the podium after a lengthy fight described as “aggressive but clean.” Di Giannantonio said he studied Márquez’s precision — particularly through left-hand turns — and “picked up a lot of ideas” about how to tackle the Spaniard in future races. Di Giannantonio credited a small setup change and his crew for lifting him among the best Ducatis on the grid, but warned Aprilia had an advantage on the slippery, deteriorating asphalt and said Ducati must work on front-end stability to carry more speed through corners. Márquez, who finished fourth after a front-end washout on a patch of peeling asphalt and early tire discomfort, acknowledged the strength of Aprilia’s package and elected to back off after his off to protect championship points. Di Giannantonio’s podium also shifted the Ducati pecking order: he left Brazil as the top Ducati rider in the standings, three points clear of Márquez and 19 points behind championship leader Marco Bezzecchi. The result underlined both the value of close wheel-to-wheel racing as a development ground and the technical issues teams will need to address going forward; Ducati’s season-long podium run had already been broken in Thailand, ending an uninterrupted streak that dated back to Silverstone 2021.
