Bagnaia started the Sprint from 13th after missing Q2 when he went wide at the final chicane in Q1, and said he made only a small improvement from Friday to Saturday.
The hard tire proved better than the other options in Sunday warm-up, but Bagnaia said his GP26 problems continued despite the change. He finished eighth in the Japanese Grand Prix, about 20.3 seconds behind race winner Marc Marquez, and said rear-grip problems kept him from matching the fastest riders all weekend. Bagnaia said he and his team tried to improve the bike with electronics and setup changes, but after the difficult weekend no further improvement was possible. Marquez won without similar tire trouble, and said he believed he could race the grand prix on the soft rear tire.
