Schedule deal settled
The ISA and the WSL have reached a deal that lets Championship Tour surfers compete in the ISA World Surfing Games in Peru despite the overlap with the WSL’s Cloud 9 stop in the Philippines. The agreement addresses the scheduling overlap around the event. For the surfers seeded into Round 3, the Peru competition will not begin until Cloud 9’s waiting period ends, which places their start after the Philippines event. That timing matters because the two stops overlap on the calendar. The deal addresses the scheduling problem created by the two events involving the same competitors.
Peru travel gap
The distance between Punta Rocas in Peru and Cloud 9 in the Philippines shows the scale of the scheduling challenge. The sites are about 11,220 miles apart, and the trip can take roughly 41 hours. The timing for the Round 3 seeds follows Cloud 9’s waiting period, with their competition in Peru not beginning until after that period ends. The arrangement addresses the overlap between the two events and the distance between their venues.
Repechage adds route
The ISA has also added a repechage round after Round 2, giving surfers who miss their first heat another chance to advance. The extra round adds a step between an early loss and elimination in the World Surfing Games format. The change gives competitors another route through the event after an opening setback.
