Logano crash at Talladega

Team Penske driver Joey Logano came through a violent finish at Talladega unharmed after his No. 22 Ford was clipped by Carson Hocevar in the tri-oval and sent airborne before it landed on its roof. The crash set off a multi-car pileup with five laps left in the Cup race and stopped the event under a red flag. Logano’s car flipped hard enough that safety crews needed several minutes to turn it back onto its wheels, and the crowd cheered when he climbed out of the overturned car. The wreck turned the closing laps into a frightening scene, with Logano emerging from the impact. He was then evaluated and released from the infield care center, closing the sequence with the most important outcome of all, that he was able to leave the track after a crash that involved at least 15 cars.

Safety crews and Logano’s relief

Logano did not hide how close the crash felt. He said he was “just happy to be alive,” a blunt assessment of a wreck that sent his Ford onto its roof. He also praised NASCAR’s safety advances and the safety crew after the incident. The wrecking sequence put a premium on the work of the men and women who reached the car, then spent several minutes getting it back onto its wheels. Once he climbed out, the mood shifted from concern to relief. Fans cheered when he climbed out of the overturned car. Logano’s reaction matched the moment. He did not try to dress it up. He made clear the crash felt severe, then credited the safety measures and the people who used them to bring the situation to a safe end.

Talladega wreck involved many drivers

The wreck did not stop with Logano and Hocevar. Chase Briscoe, Brad Keselowski, Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, Riley Herbst, Daniel Suárez, AJ Allmendinger, Chris Buescher, Noah Gragson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Alex Bowman, Connor Zilisch and Shane van Gisbergen were also caught in the incident, turning the closing laps into a broad melee across the track. Herbst was among the most heavily involved, hitting both the outside wall and the inside wall before he exited with help after apparently losing his brakes. Stenhouse was leading when the crash happened, which added another layer to a late-race sequence that had already become chaotic. The contact, the airborne flip and the chain reaction that followed left the field crowded around the aftermath. The result was a red flag and a long list of drivers involved in the crash.
