Cobb verdict
A Davidson County, North Carolina, jury found former NASCAR Truck Series driver Jennifer Jo Cobb liable in Tracey Hughes’ civil lawsuit and ordered Cobb to pay $850,002 after a three-day trial in Lexington, North Carolina. The award included $50,000 for alienation of affection, $800,000 for criminal conversation and $1 in punitive damages on each claim. The verdict gave Hughes a large monetary award, but the case still had more steps ahead because the ruling was not yet a final judgment.
Hughes claims
Hughes filed the lawsuit after alleging Cobb had an affair with her then-husband, longtime NASCAR spotter Clayton Hughes. She said the relationship helped destroy an 18-year marriage that ended after the couple separated. Cobb denied the allegations. The case centered on those claims and the breakdown of Hughes’ marriage, which she tied directly to Cobb’s relationship with her husband.
Cobb response
Cobb’s personal history with NASCAR also framed the dispute. She was married to NASCAR crew chief Eddie Troconis, and Cobb and Troconis were still legally married but separated when Cobb and Clayton Hughes were publicly linked. After the verdict, Cobb made clear she planned to keep fighting, saying, “This isn’t over.” The ruling left room for more legal action because post-trial motions or an appeal remained possible. The verdict closed one chapter in a civil fight that stretched across Cobb’s marriage, the alleged affair and the claims Hughes brought to court, but it did not end the case.
