The 2023 Street League Skateboarding (SLS) Championship Tour started with a bang in Chicago, Illinois. The men’s and women’s finals saw two Brazilian Olympic medallists, Kelvin Hoefler and Rayssa Leal, ultimately take the top spots.
Leal, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, successfully defended her 2022 title by capturing her fifth consecutive SLS win – a massive feat, to be sure. Meanwhile, Hoefler, who won silver at the most recent Olympic Summer Games, held in 2021, battled through a broken wrist and two broken fingers to emerge as the men’s champion.
American veteran Nyjah Huston, who was competing in his first SLS event in almost two years due to an ACL injury, finished in third. The defending men’s champion, Portugal’s Gustavo Ribeiro, finished sixth out of the six finalists.
Chicago also kicked off the event’s new one-day competition format which involved a men’s knockout stage. The field for the men’s competition was divided into four groups of five, with the highest-scoring skater in each group progressing to the final. The final field of six then battled it out for the overall win.
For the women’s competition, there was no knockout stage, which meant the final featured six pre-seeded skaters.
The SLS Championship Tour’s new format also features rotating roster spots and more ways to qualify, meaning different skaters will have a chance to appear at future stops, keeping things varied and interesting.
