Antonelli Recovers From Brake Problems to Finish Third in Singapore

Antonelli’s brake scare

Mercedes mechanics found a problem in Kimi Antonelli’s front brake assembly just before the formation lap at the Singapore Grand Prix, then rushed to repair it at Marina Bay and get him back on track. The fix had to hold for the full 62-lap race, and it did. Toto Wolff said the scare came from heat soak in the brakes after a sensor issue on the reconnaissance lap. Antonelli later described the situation in blunt terms after a Virtual Safety Car pit stop on lap 40. He said he had “not brakes,” and added that when he went to brake at Turn 7, “nothing happened.” He also said Mercedes had brake issues and no reliable brake temperature data, which made the car hard to control. With the problem still hanging over him, he managed the Mercedes by lifting and coasting and easing pressure on the pedal. That kept him in the race, even as the brake issue kept testing him.

Track-limits fight

The brake trouble was only part of Antonelli’s challenge. He was repeatedly warned over the radio about track limits, and the pressure kept building as the laps ran down. Antonelli recorded four track-limits violations, and that normally would have brought a five-second penalty. Mercedes pushed back on one of the laps, and the stewards ruled in the team’s favor by revoking that lap deletion. That left Antonelli without a sanction. The deleted laps included two at Turn 2, one at Turn 19 and one on his outlap during the Virtual Safety Car restart at Turn 7. The sequence showed how much margin he was losing while managing the brakes and trying to keep the car within the lines. The lap losses also explained why the radio traffic kept coming. Mercedes had to balance the car’s brake concerns with the need to avoid another stewards’ decision, and Antonelli had to drive carefully enough to protect the result while still pushing hard enough to stay in contention. In the end, the team’s challenge preserved his race and kept the penalty off the books.

Antonelli’s third-place finish

Antonelli still recovered enough to finish third. He got there after Lando Norris ran deep and he moved past Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari. That put a strong finish on a race that had looked fragile from the moment Mercedes found the brake issue before the formation lap. Antonelli’s drive was built on damage control. He had to nurse the repaired front brake assembly through the entire race, manage the car with limited brake temperature data and stay alert to every track-limits warning. He did all of that and still kept himself in podium position when the late-race chance came. The finish underlined how much the Singapore Grand Prix asked of him. He dealt with a hurried repair, a brake scare that lingered through the night and a stewards’ review that could have turned the race against him. Instead, he kept the Mercedes alive, held on through the final laps and crossed the line in third.
