Cummins Opens Smackdown
Kyle Cummins opened Chili’s Sprint Car Smackdown XV with a win in the 30-lap USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship feature at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Indiana. He came in with a 124-point lead in the season standings and backed it up with a clean run through the front of the field. Gavin Miller led the first 15 laps from the pole, but Cummins got by on lap 16 and held the lead the rest of the way. Justin Grant, Cale Coons, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Jadon Rogers finished behind him. Grant, who entered as the event’s winningest driver with 10 total Smackdown victories, was the top qualifier with a lap of 12.648 seconds. Cummins also won his heat race, giving him a strong start to the three-day program and adding another clean result to his night. Miller’s early run gave the feature a brief split at the front, but Cummins took control after the halfway point and never gave the lead back.
Smackdown Field Deepens
The event drew more than 50 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car drivers and packed the weekend with enough points and purse money to keep every position valuable. The program included 30-lap features on Thursday and Friday, then a finale built around a top-eight points lock-in and a King of the Hill bracket. That final race paid $30,000 to win and $1,500 to start. It also offered a path to a much larger payday. A driver who led all 40 laps could earn as much as $50,000 because the finale paid $500 for every lap led. The setup gave the field several ways to make an impact, from qualifying to heats to the longer races at the end of the night. At least 13 first-time Smackdown entrants were also in the mix, all chasing Rookie of the Year honors against a deep group of veterans. Grant’s 10 Smackdown wins stood as the benchmark in a field that mixed proven results with fresh faces. The front of the program mattered, but the structure left plenty of room for drivers to build their nights in stages.
Preliminary Action Shapes Night
The rest of the program reflected that depth. Mitchel Moles won the semi and Dalton Stevens won the C-main, two more rounds that shaped the field before the main feature settled the opener. Eli Wilhelmus flipped in the second heat, and Jake Swanson flipped on lap 13 of the feature. Those moments underlined how demanding Kokomo was from the start. Drivers had to advance through heats, semis and the C-main before they could even reach the front-end battles that mattered most. Cummins managed every step cleanly. He won his heat, worked through Miller’s early pace and took control when it counted. That left him with the first big result of Smackdown XV and gave him the opening-night win in an event where every lap and every round carried weight. It also fit the shape of a weekend built around repeated pressure, from the first qualifying runs to the final payout ladder.
