Riggs wins Charlotte
Riggs won Friday night’s Ecosave 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Riggs, the top seed in the Chase, took the lead with seven laps left after Honeycutt got sideways and brushed the wall. Riggs also won Stage 1, while Honeycutt took Stage 2, and Christian Eckes, Honeycutt, Bayley Currey and Chandler Smith rounded out the top five. Riggs entered Charlotte 37 points behind Honeycutt.
Honeycutt leads Chase
Honeycutt still left Charlotte as the points leader after the third race of the Chase, and he carried a 17-point cushion over Riggs with four races remaining. At Kansas Speedway on Sept. 26, he scored 75 of a possible 76 points and moved into the points lead with his third win of the season. Riggs had been second late at Kansas before he hit the wall and finished 19th, then said he “should have been smarter there.” Chandler Smith stood third in the standings, 71 points back, and Gio Ruggiero was fourth, 72 points behind Honeycutt. Riggs’ six victories this season still gave him twice as many as any of the other Chase drivers.
