Le Mans timing tight as FIA calendar avoids key clashes

NXTbets Pro | Published On: September 16, 2026

Formula 1 calendar

The provisional 2027 Formula 1 calendar gives endurance racing a clean opening. It avoids a clash with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa. That keeps crossover plans from being ruled out by a direct calendar clash. This calendar keeps the gap between Formula 1 and Le Mans at one week, which leaves room for drivers who want to sample both worlds. Monaco sits on the same weekend as the Le Mans test day, so the tightest pressure comes before the race itself. Portugal follows Monaco in the run of events, and that sequence keeps a path open for Formula 1 drivers who want to take part at Le Mans. Rookie Le Mans entries usually must complete the test day to be eligible, so that weekend remains the key hurdle. Le Mans organizers can grant exemptions to Platinum drivers racing in another major championship. There is also precedent for drivers to meet the test-day requirement by doing the laps in practice instead. That combination gives teams and drivers more flexibility, even with a busy calendar in front of them.

McLaren seats

McLaren has built the most direct route into Le Mans by leaving space in its Hypercar program. The team is said to be keeping two of its six FIA World Endurance Championship seats open while it weighs its lineup for the race. That gives McLaren room to react if schedules line up and the right drivers become available. Lando Norris sits near the center of that discussion. He tested McLaren’s new MCL-HY Hypercar at Portimao and also drove the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which shows the team has already put him through meaningful running. If the calendar works, those open seats could allow Norris to race at Le Mans. Scott Dixon could also fit into that picture if McLaren decides his schedule and experience make sense for the program. McLaren’s likely two-driver Hypercar plan makes that path even clearer, since it would let the team commit without overextending itself across the full entry. The structure gives McLaren room to choose, and it gives Norris a realistic shot at a Le Mans entry if both sides want to move forward. In a year when the Formula 1 and endurance calendars line up more neatly, that kind of setup stands out.

Verstappen options

Max Verstappen also has a lane into the conversation if he wants more GT3 outings. His Nürburgring 24 Hours appearance gives him a base to build from, and the new calendar leaves him more room to explore sports car racing without colliding with Formula 1 commitments. The Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Spa 24 Hours sit outside the key Le Mans clash points, so they remain workable alternatives for a driver looking at one-off endurance appearances. Those events could give Verstappen further GT3 outings if his schedule permits. The same calendar that helps McLaren and Norris also keeps options open for him, even if those options point to different races. For Verstappen, that flexibility leaves room to pursue additional endurance appearances. This schedule avoids the biggest endurance conflicts and still leaves the door open for crossover entries when the timing works.
