Marc Marquez earns first title chance after Qatar sprint win

NXTbets Pro | Published On: November 7, 2026

Marquez title

Marquez turned a Qatar sprint win into his first chance to clinch the 2026 MotoGP title in Sunday’s grand prix. He arrived with a 44-point lead in the standings and left with a 49-point advantage after the sprint, but the math stayed tight. Marquez can seal the championship only by outscoring Jorge Martin by 30 points and Marco Bezzecchi by eight points over the Qatar weekend. That chase set the tone before the lights went out at Lusail. Bezzecchi had already taken pole position, Marquez had qualified second and Fabio Di Giannantonio had lined up third. Martin started 11th after a season-worst qualifying result. Marquez also made clear before the race that he expected Bezzecchi to set the pace. He said Bezzecchi had “another pace” on used tires and looked like the rider to beat. That assessment matched the shape of the weekend. Marquez had the points cushion, but Bezzecchi had the speed in qualifying and Martin still had a path to keep the title race alive if the sprint and grand prix broke his way.

Qatar sprint

The sprint changed fast after a red flag on the second lap. Fermin Aldeguer crashed into Francesco Bagnaia at Turn 1, and the race stopped with Bagnaia sent to hospital after suffering foot fractures. The restart brought more trouble at the front. Marquez made contact with Bezzecchi at Turn 1 after the race resumed, Bezzecchi crashed out and stewards took no further action. Marquez kept his composure and finished the job from there. Di Giannantonio took second in the sprint and Martin crossed third, which kept both in the championship picture for a few more hours. The field had already been trimmed by Yamaha’s absence from the Qatar weekend, which left a 17-rider grid at Lusail. That made every position matter even more in the sprint, where a single mistake or a single restart could reshape the title fight. Bagnaia’s crash removed him from the day after Aldeguer’s collision. The sprint then became a direct test of Marquez’s control under pressure. He handled the restart, kept his lead in the standings and walked away with the result he needed to stay on the doorstep of the championship.

Title picture

The sprint victory tightened the title race in a simple way. Only Marquez, Martin and Bezzecchi remained mathematically in contention afterward. Pedro Acosta was eliminated from title contention, which cut the list of potential champions down to three. That narrowed focus gives Sunday’s grand prix even more weight, because Marquez now has his first chance to close the deal in the main race rather than waiting for another round. The task is clear. He must stay ahead of both Martin and Bezzecchi by enough over the Qatar weekend to make the title official. The weekend already showed how quickly the order can swing. Bezzecchi owned pole, Marquez had the sprint win, Di Giannantonio put together a solid second place in the sprint and Martin salvaged third after a poor qualifying run. Marquez also showed the margin he can carry into race day. Even after the red-flag interruption, the restart contact and the pressure of a title chase, he still extended his lead. That makes him the rider with the clearest path into the grand prix. Bezzecchi has the pace. Martin still has a mathematical shot. Marquez has the points lead, the first title chance and the momentum that came with winning the sprint after the restart.
