Marc Marquez sweeps Motegi, beats Martin to complete Japan weekend sweep

NXTbets Pro | Published On: October 4, 2026

Marquez sweeps

Marquez put together the kind of Motegi weekend that changes a title fight. He won the sprint by leading every lap, then backed it up with victory in the Japanese Grand Prix to complete a clean sweep. The sprint gave him the first big push. He controlled the race from the front and survived a chaotic opening lap that ended with Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta and Fabio Di Giannantonio out after a crash at Turn 3. That early incident also set up the rest of the order behind him. Diogo Moreira moved up to second, and the result gave him his first MotoGP Sprint podium. It also made him the first Brazilian rider to reach a Saturday rostrum in MotoGP.

The sprint carried more weight than a routine win because it hit Jorge Martin’s championship margin. Marquez’s victory cut Martin’s lead to seven points before the grand prix. The result also brought more movement after the flag. Alex Marquez received a double Long Lap penalty for Sunday after the crash, while Martin and Enea Bastianini were penalized after the sprint for exceeding track limits on the final lap. Marquez left the day with momentum and a chance to keep pressing in the points chase. The sprint showed the same pattern that carried through the rest of the weekend. Marquez stayed calm at the front, made the field chase him and kept the pressure on the rider leading the standings.

Japanese Grand Prix

Marquez finished the job in the Japanese Grand Prix with a pass that decided the race and the weekend. Martin led the first 10 laps, but Marquez found his opening on lap 11 at Turn 9 and took control from there. He pulled away to win by 1.363 seconds and seal the Motegi sweep. The result left no doubt about his pace across the full weekend. He handled the pressure in the race, waited for the right moment and made the move count when the chance came. Martin stayed in the fight early, but once Marquez got by, the race turned in his favor. The win also matched the sprint result and gave him the strongest possible answer to Martin’s championship lead. Motegi became a clean statement from Marquez, one that stretched from the first lap of the sprint to the closing stages of the grand prix.

The rest of the podium and top six filled out behind the two title contenders. Marco Bezzecchi finished third, Enea Bastianini took fourth, Raul Fernandez came home fifth and Ai Ogura finished sixth. Those results mattered, but the front of the race defined the weekend. Marquez and Martin separated themselves from the field for long stretches, then Marquez made the one pass that changed the outcome. The sequence from laps 1 through 11 told the story. Martin led early. Marquez waited. Then Marquez attacked at Turn 9 and held the edge to the finish. That combination of patience and speed gave him the grand prix and the overall Motegi sweep.

Championship picture

Motegi tightened the championship race around the two riders at the center of it. Marquez’s sprint win cut Martin’s lead to seven points before the grand prix. Then Marquez’s Sunday victory trimmed that gap again and moved him to within two points of Martin in the championship. That swing made the weekend one of the most important of the season so far. Marquez left Japan after winning both races and with real momentum in the title fight. Martin, who led the opening stages of the grand prix, still left with the points lead, but the margin shrank fast across the Motegi weekend.

The title picture now runs through the same names that shaped the races in Japan. Marquez has the form after winning both events. Martin has the lead, but it is down to two points after the grand prix. The sprint and the grand prix both showed how narrow the margin has become. A crash on the opening lap of the sprint changed one race. A move on lap 11 changed the other. Marquez took advantage in both cases and turned Motegi into a full weekend sweep. Martin remains in front in the standings, but Marquez closed the gap enough to make the championship chase far tighter heading out of Japan.
