Marc Marquez pole
Marc Marquez put himself in control of the Australian Grand Prix weekend at Phillip Island by taking pole position in damp, tricky conditions after a crash on his first Q2 flying lap forced him onto his second bike. He still came through with the fastest lap, a 1:34.203, and he did it with a huge 1.494-second cushion over Alex Marquez. That kind of gap put the session firmly in his hands and gave him clean track position for the races ahead.
Alex Marquez lined up second, while Johann Zarco completed the front row in third. Jorge Martin recovered from a difficult session in the wet and climbed to fourth after sitting 10th late in qualifying. Jack Miller took fifth in what was his last MotoGP qualifying at Phillip Island. The order set up a front group with multiple riders close enough to challenge, but Marquez had already shown he could handle the conditions well when it mattered.
Sprint lead battle
The sprint turned into a tight fight almost immediately, with Jorge Martin jumping from fourth to second at the start and then joining Marc Marquez in a constant battle for the front. The two riders traded the lead nine times in the opening eight laps of the 13-lap race, turning the middle of the sprint into a relentless sequence of passes and counterattacks. Marquez kept answering every move and stayed in the fight at the front as the laps counted down.
Martin’s charge ended on lap eight when he crashed out and had to go to the medical center for checks. That left Marquez to settle the race from there, and he held on to win by 0.323 seconds over Alex Marquez. Fabio Di Giannantonio finished third and Marco Bezzecchi took fourth, giving the sprint a compact top group behind the winner. The race never lost its edge early, but Marquez came through the pressure and delivered the result when the lead battle was at its most intense.
Title race shift
The sprint win gave Marc Marquez another lift in the championship standings, and he moved 10 points clear of Jorge Martin after the race. That swing made the result about more than one sprint victory. It changed the title picture at a weekend where Martin had already shown enough pace to start near the front and fight for the lead before his crash.
Several other front-runners failed to see the finish. Raul Fernandez, Maverick Vinales, Johann Zarco and Pecco Bagnaia did not complete the sprint, which thinned out the group around Marquez before the flag. Even with that attrition, the result still came down to the riders who stayed in the race and the one who handled the last laps best. Marquez did that, first in qualifying and then in the sprint, and he left Phillip Island with a stronger hold on the title race.
