How Verstappen took the lead
Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix for Red Bull after starting fifth following a clash with Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and a qualifying lock-up. He moved up to third on lap one with a strong start, then took the lead through on-track gains and Red Bull’s pit strategy. The victory was Verstappen’s third of the season and his sixth at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. He beat Lewis Hamilton by 0.799 seconds.
Leclerc penalty and Ferrari
Charles Leclerc’s five-second penalty helped Verstappen pass him in the pits. Lewis Hamilton finished second for Ferrari, and Leclerc ended up fourth after his penalty changed the order. Verstappen said the win was “fantastic” and added that Ferrari made it difficult for themselves by battling each other.
Antonelli finishes third
The race also produced a major milestone for Kimi Antonelli, who finished third and secured his maiden Formula 1 world championship. The grand prix was halted after Valtteri Bottas crashed at Turn 1, with the red flag coming after 46 of 71 laps. The final order was Verstappen first, Hamilton second, Antonelli third and Leclerc fourth.
