Audi’s appeal has grown as the German manufacturer moves toward its full works effort after completing its takeover of Sauber for the 2026 season. The team has invested heavily in its Formula 1 project and has made solid progress with both its chassis and power unit in its first season. That development gives Audi a stronger platform than a new entrant usually has, and it helps explain why Steiner views the seat as attractive. He also said Russell would face competition from Carlos Sainz for the role, with Sainz presenting a strong option for the team as it shapes its long-term driver plan. Mercedes outlook
Mercedes has tried to steady the picture by continuing to develop Antonelli and by keeping the focus on its current driver pairing. Toto Wolff said Antonelli needs time to develop, and he described Verstappen as a driver at the peak of his abilities. Wolff also said he would not be scared by a superstar lineup because of his experience with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Even with those remarks, he said he wants to keep Mercedes’ current driver lineup for 2027. Russell has also made his own position clear. He has reaffirmed his commitment to Mercedes and has not decided to leave. He is not necessarily leaving imminently either. That leaves Mercedes with a mix of ambition and uncertainty, as Antonelli’s rise, Verstappen’s presence in the market and Wolff’s own comments all feed into the same conversation around Russell’s future.
