Acosta and Ducati
The KTM rider said he would not have done well on a Ducati in 2026 if he had joined VR46, a view that reflected how much his situation had changed since he spent part of this year weighing a possible switch. He stayed with KTM for the final year of his contract, then learned he was set to join the factory Ducati team alongside Marc Marquez in 2027. Acosta said the timing was better now than it would have been earlier. He had already taken one major step in the class by winning his first MotoGP race in Austria, and he said the Ducati move now came at a better time.
KTM frustration and timing
Acosta did not hide the frustration he felt during a difficult period at KTM. He said he had discussed a possible move to Ducati this year, but the path never fully opened and he remained with KTM for the final season of his deal. He said the move would have looked different if it had happened earlier. His point was simple: the timing mattered, and the timing was better now. Acosta also linked that view to his own development as a rider. He had already proven he could win at the top level, giving context to his belief that the Ducati move was better suited to him now. That was why the 2027 move carried more meaning than the idea he had considered this year.
Marquez comparison and respect
Acosta’s future at Ducati also put him in the same garage as Marquez, and he was clear about how he viewed that challenge. His main goal, he said, would be to adapt to the team’s way of working and learn from Marquez before the rider retired. He called Marquez the best rider of the last 15 years, and he said he had great respect for him. Acosta said his own style was different from Marquez’s, and he pushed back on the idea that the two rode in the same way. He said people had often compared him more to Jorge Lorenzo than to Marquez, which gave a better picture of how he saw his own approach on the bike. He also compared Marquez with Valentino Rossi. Acosta said the only comment he regretted making was his joking “who is Marc Marquez” remark on the TV show La revuelta. He said the line was misunderstood because people took a lighthearted interview seriously.
