ASD is committed to our users playing responsibly with our affiliated partners and sportsbooks. It’s important to always bet within your budget and limits and to experience real-money betting experience as a form of enjoyable and responsible entertainment. Our users and players in general should never be required or feel pressured to gamble or risk their money and welfare when betting. Gambling is never an answer or responsible way to deal with personal or financial problems and we would like to make clear that if you are depressed, at financial risk or otherwise mentally or emotionally vulnerable you should always refrain from gambling and seek support from your family, friends or professional services. Gambling can be damaging to anybody. Please always gamble responsibly and safely.

2. What are the risks of gambling?

  • One of the main risks of gambling to people and their families is financial. Gamblers who are unable to control
their gaming behaviors can rapidly find themselves spending their own and other’s funds and savings, or
indebting themselves via credit cards and loans in order to continue playing and chasing losses.
  • At risk Gamblers habitually lie about their destructive behavior to their families, friends and colleagues. They
may end up losing their loved ones and friendships as a result of breaking people’s trust.
  • Gamblers are at a high risk of developing severe emotional and physical problems, including depression and
    suicidal thoughts.
  • Gamblers put their employment and livelihoods at risk.

4. Gambling myths and facts

Myth: You have to gamble every day to be a problem gambler.
Fact: Problem gamblers can gamble frequently or intermittently. Problem gamblers can be identified
by their overall behaviors by looking at the outlined signs they might display.
Myth: Problem gamblers gamble at any opportunity and on anything
Fact: Problem gambling can take on any shape – there are no set rules or patterns. Seemingly reasonable gambling behavior might mask a particular compulsion – such as the need to wager less frequently but with significant sums or a disinterest in sports wagering but a compulsion for types of casino betting.
Myth: Gambling or betting is not really a problem if the gambler can afford it.
Fact: Even if a person can arguably afford to gamble, there may be other costs to that person. Problems may manifest themselves if they negatively affect a person’s mental or physical well-being or those around them, such as a loss of trust with family and friends or other negative behaviors.
Myth: Problem gamblers are irresponsible people.
Fact: Problem gamblers, like many addicts or persons with emotional issues can behave in a responsible manner and hold important social or professional positions. This does not mean that such people are invulnerable to developing gambling problems. Problem gambling may be periodic or episodic, or manifest over a long period of time, eventually leading to the outlined risks, sometimes when it’s too late.
Myth: Children are not affected by problem gambling.
Fact: Surveys consistently show that significant minorities of North American youth have experienced or are exposed to gambling-related problems and will be at risk of developing such pathological gambling problems too. Children of problem gamblers are at a higher risk of developing health related behaviors, even if they are not gambling themselves, including substance abuse, eating disorders, depression and suicidal thoughts.
Myth: External factors always drive problem gambling
Fact: Most problem gamblers are ordinary people living normal lives who eventually find themselves in trouble. Problem gamblers are skilled in excusing or hiding their gambling, including blaming others or lying about their behaviors. There is no defined reasons or factors why people turn into problem gamblers and their compulsion may not be driven by external or logical factors.
Myth: Solving a gambler’s financial issues and debts is the most important step to recovery
Fact: Finding solutions to financial issues caused by problem gambling is very important but does not solve the underlying physical or mental damage affecting problem gamblers. Problem gamblers will revert to their gambling behaviors if these are not addressed in their totality – for example by seeking professional help.
Myth: Problem gambling is easy to recognize.
Fact: Problem gambling is an addiction similar to other forms. Symptoms and effects can often be hidden for very long times and don’t always manifest themselves like alcohol and drug abuse. Many problem gamblers themselves do not recognize they have a gambling problem
