George Russell put Mercedes at the front for the Dutch Grand Prix sprint at Zandvoort, and he did it with a lap that stood up in a tight fight at the top of the order. Russell turned a 1:11.567 to edge Lando Norris by 0.041 seconds and claim sprint pole. Charles Leclerc took third, just 0.055 seconds behind Russell, and Oscar Piastri lined up fourth. Russell’s lap carried extra weight because it was his third sprint pole of the 2026 season. He delivered when the margin for error disappeared, and his time held as the field sorted itself behind him. Leclerc stayed close enough to keep the pressure on, Norris missed out by a sliver and Piastri remained in the mix without cracking the top three. The result gave Russell clean track position for the sprint and set the tone for the rest of the weekend at Zandvoort. It also showed how quickly the order could shift on a circuit where tiny mistakes cost big time and the front-runners had almost no room to separate themselves.
Antonelli and Verstappen land midpack
Kimi Antonelli qualified fifth after floor damage from a gravel excursion in SQ1, a setback that left him trying to recover ground rather than attack the front of the grid. Max Verstappen took sixth and Lewis Hamilton seventh, with Pierre Gasly eighth. The full top eight placed a wide range of name value in close proximity, but the key detail remained the same, Russell’s lap created the first gap and the rest of the field could only chase it.
That qualifying order shaped the sprint before the lights even went out. Antonelli’s problem in SQ1 mattered because it left him playing catch-up against the clock and against the damage done to the car. Verstappen and Hamilton both found themselves behind the front row group, a spot that left them dependent on the opening laps to move forward. Gasly completed the top eight and gave the sprint a compact starting order across the front half of the field. The session did not produce a runaway margin anywhere near the front. Instead, it produced a grid stacked closely enough that one mistake, one damaged floor or one imperfect lap could push a driver several spots back in an instant.
Russell wins the sprint
Russell turned pole into victory in the 24-lap sprint, led every lap and never gave the field a chance to take control. Leclerc passed Norris on lap 18 and finished second, while Norris settled for third. Antonelli came home fourth, Piastri finished fifth, Verstappen sixth, Hamilton seventh and Gasly eighth. The race mirrored the qualifying session in one important way, the front group stayed tight, but Russell made sure the lead never changed hands.
The win also sharpened the championship picture for Russell. He said the sprint victory cut his deficit to Antonelli to 56 points and left him three points behind Hamilton. That added another layer to a result that already mattered for the weekend order. Russell started from the front, controlled the pace and converted that advantage into a clean win without yielding the lead. Leclerc’s pass on Norris changed the order behind him, but it did nothing to threaten the result at the front. Russell kept the sprint under his control from start to finish, and the outcome left him in a stronger position heading into the rest of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
