Russell took Azerbaijan pole as penalties reshaped grid

Russell pole position
George Russell put Mercedes on pole position in Baku qualifying, with Charles Leclerc second and Oscar Piastri third. That result held at the sharp end even as the rest of the starting order kept shifting under stewards’ rulings.
The pole stood out because the session was not just about one driver’s lap, it was about how quickly the order could change once the officials reviewed what happened in Q3. Two separate penalties altered the picture after the session, and movement came farther down the grid. Russell’s result stayed intact. The stewards’ calls changed the rest of the field around him.
Sainz penalty
Carlos Sainz took the hardest hit in the aftermath, receiving a five-place grid penalty and two penalty points for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags in Q3. Stewards said the yellow flags were visible and telemetry showed no meaningful speed reduction in the relevant sector. Sainz said he had made a “global lift,” but the stewards rejected that explanation. Their ruling dropped him from ninth to 14th on the starting grid and created a chain reaction in the order behind him.
That penalty pushed Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, Liam Lawson, Alex Albon and Esteban Ocon up one place each. It was a clean example of how one ruling can change several rows at once.
Perez penalty
Sergio Perez also took a grid penalty after stewards ruled that he impeded Oscar Piastri during qualifying in Baku. Perez received three places for the incident after he was judged to have blocked Piastri while on a preparation lap and weaving to warm his tires through Turns 18, 19 and 20. Stewards said Perez had received two warnings that Piastri was approaching. They ruled the block unnecessary but not dangerous. Piastri said he had to lift because of Perez, but he did not believe he lost significant lap time.
The penalty added another twist to a session already altered by Sainz’s sanction. Perez was still set to start 20th because Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll had engine penalties that sent them to the back of the grid. That left Perez in a crowded and complicated section of the order, where the original qualifying result mattered less than the penalties layered on top of it.
