The stewards’ decision centered on how Sainz handled the yellow-flag condition in the closing part of qualifying. By the time the hearing ended, the qualifying result had already changed the shape of the Baku grid. Sainz’s ninth-place time remained the qualifying result, but the penalty placed him five spots lower for the start. The five-place penalty also moved several rivals up one spot each. Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, Liam Lawson, Alex Albon and Esteban Ocon all gained positions after Sainz was dropped from ninth to 14th. That change adjusted the order behind him before the race start, with each of those five drivers benefiting from the stewards’ ruling.
The revised classification showed how a post-qualifying sanction can alter track position without changing the underlying laps. The drivers around Sainz gained places, while his qualifying performance no longer translated into the same starting position.
