Tom Cruise seeks authentic NASCAR feel in ‘Days of Thunder 2’

Cruise returns

Tom Cruise is back in the cockpit for the sequel, returning as Cole Trickle and bringing Anne Hathaway into the cast as the project leans on star power and racing credibility. Cruise made that clear when he spoke with NASCAR officials at Daytona International Speedway, where he said he wants to treat the sport with respect and give audiences a real sense of NASCAR’s speed, excitement and danger. Steve O’Donnell said Cruise wants the movie to be as authentic as possible, and he added that Cruise has never raced in motorsports before. The actor has also expressed interest in running a legitimate ARCA Menards Series race. The sequel gives Cruise a chance to revisit a role tied to one of the sport’s best-known screen stories, but this time with a sharper focus on the details that matter to fans who follow NASCAR closely.

NASCAR builds

NASCAR expects to build more than 80 race cars for the sequel, a larger total than the 60 cars used in the 1990 original film. NASCAR was heavily involved in the first Days of Thunder, and the car count reflects the scale of the sequel’s production. Cruise’s push for authenticity lines up with that plan.

Tracks remain unclear

The biggest unknown now is where the cameras will roll. It is still unclear which tracks will appear in the movie, and it is also unclear how closely the story will follow the modern Cup Series. NASCAR still hopes the film will do what the original helped do, bring new fans to the sport by putting its speed and atmosphere in front of a wider audience. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been part of discussions with the filmmakers, and Carson Hocevar has been involved as well. Cruise’s willingness to engage with the sport and O’Donnell’s view that the film is aiming for maximum authenticity remain central to the project’s stated focus.
