Wolff defends Russell after Marko questions Formula 1 title chances

Wolff backs Russell

Toto Wolff pushed back hard on Helmut Marko’s criticism of George Russell, saying the Mercedes driver still has the tools to win a Formula 1 championship in the right car. Marko said Russell was no longer Mercedes’ number one driver and questioned whether he would get another chance to fight for a title. Wolff did not buy that view. He said Russell has already proven himself in Formula 2, Formula 3 and karting, and he described him as one of Mercedes’ best drivers. Wolff’s response framed Russell as a proven talent whose title chances hinge more on the package around him than on any lack of ability behind the wheel. He also made clear he sees the door to a championship still open if Mercedes gives Russell a faster car in a new season.

Russell’s Austin setback

Russell’s result at the United States Grand Prix gave Wolff another reason to defend him and another reminder of how fine the margins are for Mercedes. Russell finished eighth in Austin, behind teammate Kimi Antonelli, after receiving a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage while battling Oscar Piastri on the opening lap. Wolff said that penalty was not the main reason for the result. He pointed instead to the car and said Russell’s struggles stemmed in part from a Mercedes package that does not suit him as well as it suits Antonelli. Wolff said the team needs to understand why the car works so much better for Antonelli. He pointed to the W17’s narrow operating window as the likely explanation for Russell’s lack of pace. The message from Mercedes was clear, Russell’s performance issues in Austin were tied to the car’s traits, not a loss of class from the driver himself.

Antonelli title push

Antonelli’s win in Austin tightened the focus on the title race and put Russell’s result into a wider championship context. After the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli led Russell by 123 points with 125 points still available. He needed two points in Mexico City to clinch the 2026 championship. That margin underscored how quickly Mercedes’ internal picture has shifted, with Antonelli delivering results that have pushed him to the front of the season’s closing stretch. Russell, meanwhile, remains in the fight to show he can match that level when the car gives him what he needs. Wolff’s comments made that point plain. He sees Russell as a driver who still belongs in the title conversation, even after a difficult Sunday in Austin, and he wants Mercedes to solve the car problem that has limited him.
