Verstappen won Singapore Grand Prix, Antonelli led title race

Singapore result

Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole position and took his first victory at Marina Bay. The result was his second straight Formula 1 win. He left the weekend with the win, the pole and a milestone victory at a venue where he had never won before.

Podium results

Charles Leclerc finished second, 7.3 seconds behind Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third. Lando Norris finished fourth and Oscar Piastri came home fifth. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth after a compromised strategy. George Russell finished ninth after starting from the back of the grid because of a penalty.

Antonelli led

Antonelli left Singapore atop the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship with 340 points. Russell stood second on 238 and Hamilton was third on 229, which put Antonelli 102 points clear of Russell after the race. That gap was the defining number from the championship picture that followed Singapore. It gave Antonelli the lead while Russell and Hamilton remained in pursuit. He said he had not driven particularly well in Singapore and that the title remained close. Antonelli could become Formula 1’s youngest-ever champion at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. He left the weekend leading the championship, with the margin over Russell at 102 points and Hamilton trailing in third. The result did not settle the title race. It did show where the pressure sat: Antonelli led, while Russell and Hamilton trailed.
