Surf Abu Dhabi Pro dropped
The World Surf League has canceled Surf Abu Dhabi Pro from the 2026 Championship Tour, trimming the season from 13 events to 12 and removing one of the stops from the series. The league said persistent constraints on international flights and the current situation in the region made the event unfeasible. WSL CEO Ryan Crosby said the league explored every option but could not move forward with the event. He also said the WSL values its partnership with Surf Abu Dhabi and hopes to return.
WSL schedule shift
The cancellation changes the shape of the Championship Tour. With 12 events instead of 13, surfers will now count their best nine results under the revised format. That gives athletes a narrower path to build their rankings and puts a premium on clean performances across the year. Every result still matters, but the margin for error tightens when the tour has one fewer chance to add points. The new setup also makes the flow of the schedule more important from stop to stop, since each event feeds into a shorter season and the points chase now runs through a smaller slate.
Tour format changes
The tour’s late-season structure also shifts under the revised plan. Lowers will become the final event before the postseason cut, setting the line for who stays in the title chase. After Lowers, the top 22 men and top 14 women will advance, with two wild cards per gender. Reduced fields will compete in Portugal and the Philippines before the full rosters return for Pipeline. That creates a clear progression through the back half of the schedule, with smaller draws leading into the final stretch and the complete fields back in place for Pipeline. The format gives the postseason cut added importance, since the results at Lowers will determine who moves on and who falls out of the main title race.
