Riders set off from Lille, and Team Cofidis was the first to capitalize, courtesy of Benjamin Thomas. The Frenchman snatched the first King of the Mountain point and formed part of the breakaway that was eventually roped in by the peloton with 65 miles remaining. Jasper Philipsen earned the honor of wearing the first yellow jersey of this campaign, with a thrilling dash for the line on Boulevard Vauban. The Belgian prevailed on opening day after entering with odds of +480, returning a potential $108.00 on a $20 wager. We don’t expect to see any serious moves in the GC until early next week, but we’ll allow the 2023 green jersey victor to bask in the glory of holding two key shirts after the first stage.
King of the Mountains
It was an eventful day on the climbs, featuring fierce battles, crashes, and a polka dot jersey for the host nation and Team Cofidis. Benjamin Thomas prevailed in the first two KOM duels, to don the inaugural polka dirt jersey of this year’s race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all positive, as he went down at the top of the Côte de Cassel, taking his compatriot Mattéo Vercher with him. The crash put him out of contention for the third climb of the day, which saw Double Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard summit ahead of the pack, contributing one point to his KOM ambitions.
Points Classification (Green Jersey)
The attackers were chased down by the peloton just under 50 miles into the stage, setting up a tantalizing showdown to open the points classification contest. Reigning green jersey holder Biniam Girmay got himself into a promising position at the business end of the intermediate sprint but had to settle for third. It was the favorite Jonathan Milan who lived up to bettors’ expectations and took the first 20 points on offer in the classification, while Cofidis captured 17 more units from Bryan Coquard.
Despite their efforts, it was Jasper Philipsen who rode away from the first stage at the head of the points classification.
Best Young Rider
“The Pride of Africa,” Biniam Girmay takes the early lead in the best young rider classification, after finishing runner-up on day one, four seconds behind Philipsen. Girmay enters Sunday with a two-second advantage over the next young rider, Søren Wærenskjold from Uno-X Mobility.
Team Classification
Six outfits share the spoils in the team classification, including Tudor Pro Cycling, Alpecin–Deceuninck, and Team Visma–Lease a Bike. Tadej Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates XRG contingent are 39 seconds off the pace
