Day two of the 2025 Tour de France appeared dull both in weather and action for a large portion of the proceedings, bar a few crashes and bike swaps. That all changed after the second climb on the route when the favorites made a charge to state their intentions. Mathieu van der Poel won the race to Boulogne-sur-Mer and will now wear the yellow jersey tomorrow. In other news, Biniam Girmay lost his white jersey privileges and will now surely focus on the points classification. Get up to speed with the latest standings in our 2025 Tour de France stage 2 report.
Jasper Philipsen relinquished the yellow shirt after falling behind the peloton in the closing stages. He now drops back to seventh, 31 seconds off the pace. The day belonged to Mathieu van der Poel, who took the stage in an emphatic sprint to lead the General Classification. He leads the Tour by four seconds ahead of pre-race favorite Tadej Ppogačar.
King of the Mountains
Defending Champion Tadej Pogačar opened his account this Tour by bagging three points in the King of the Mountain contest. The Slovenian will wear the polka dot tomorrow, holding a single point lead over three riders, including his perennial rival, Jonas Vingegaard.
Points Classification (Green Jersey)
Jasper Philipsen might’ve lost his yellow jersey, but his points classification aspirations are very much alive. The Alpecin–Deceuninck rider took eight points in the intermediate sprint and is 17 points clear of Biniam Girmay in second.
Best Young Rider
Local lad Kévin Vauquelin will don the coveted white jersey on stage three, after snatching it from Girmay. He leads the charge ahead of British youngster Joseph Blackmore by 31 seconds, and six other riders, trailing by 39 seconds.
Team Classification
After stage two, we have an outright leader in the team classification, showing that you don’t need star individuals to work as a unit. French outfit Groupama–FDJ doesn’t have any riders in the top 10 of the GC, but they hold a 31-second buffer over Visma–Lease a Bike.
