Valentin Paret-Peintre fought hard and prevailed against Ben Healy in the race to the top of Mont Ventroux. The victory gave the host nation something to cheer about on a day when their other prospect, Lenny Martinez, relinquished the polka dot shirt to Tadej Pogačar. The Slovenian finished fifth on the stage after an epic tussle with Jonas Vingegaard, extending his lead to 4:15 in the General Classification.
The breakaway held on again for a stage win, but they were made to work hard for the triumph in the closing stages. With Vingegaard constantly trying to shake off Pogačar, the dynamic duo closed in on the breakaway. However, Ben Healy and Valentin Paret-Peintre had other ideas. The Frenchman got the inside line to the finish on the final turn, which proved to be the difference, denying the Irishman his second stage win of the tour. The victory for Paret-Peintre lifted the spirits of his team, Soudal Quick-Step, after losing Remco Evenepoel on stage 14.
General Classification
There is no change to the standings at the top of the General Classification. Tadej Pogačar leads Jonas Vingegaard and Florian Lipowitz. However, Pogi managed to put a couple of seconds on his rivals, now 4:15 ahead of Jonas, and 9:03 from Lipowitz. If today is a preview of what Vingegaard and his teammates have in store, they will continue trying to break Pogačar as the Tour moves into the Alps.
King of the Mountains
Frenchman Lenny Martinez failed to collect any points towards his polka dot jersey ambitions today, leaving the door open for Pogi to close the gap. The race leader didn’t need a second invitation and collected eight points at the top of Mont Ventoux, equaling Martinez on 60 points. The Frenchman will look to make a break after the intermediate sprint on tomorrow’s stage to maximize his points intake on a relatively flat stage.
Points Classification
Pogačar is closing in on the green jersey as well, now only 11 points shy of Jonathan Milan, who went pointless on stage 16. Jonas Abrahamsen snatched up 20 points in the intermediate sprint, while Valentin Paret-Peintre contributed 30 units
Youth Classification
Florian Lipowitz continues his dominance in the youngsters’ race, now holding a 2:01 lead over Oscar Onley. The young German is also firmly cemented to the final podium spot in the GC, but can he hold on for the remaining five stages?
