Fernando Alonso has locked in his future with Aston Martin, signing a new contract that keeps him with the team through the 2027 Formula 1 season. The extension means he will continue his Formula 1 career into 2027, which will be his 24th full-time season in grand prix racing. It will also prolong his record for the most Formula 1 starts, a mark that currently stands at 440.
Retirement video
Alonso revealed the contract in a video built to look like a retirement announcement, only to flip the message at the end. He said he would retire from F1 “but not yet.” Alonso said he took time to make the decision and still feels fast, motivated and passionate about the sport.
Aston Martin plans
Aston Martin paired Alonso’s deal with another major move, announcing a contract extension for Lance Stroll as well. Lawrence Stroll said Alonso and his son are both important to Aston Martin’s plans.
The timing also follows a difficult 2026 season for Alonso. He has criticized the current regulations, the Aston Martin AMR26 and the Honda power unit, and he has pushed for changes to the 2027 rules. Alonso has said he believes in Aston Martin’s long-term project.
