Bubba Wallace falls to 17th after Phoenix speeding penalty

NXTbets Pro | Published On: October 22, 2026

Wallace penalty fallout

Bubba Wallace had the Freeway Insurance 500 in reach at Phoenix Raceway until a pit-road speeding penalty sent him to 17th. The 23XI Racing driver led 52 laps, his most in a race this season, and he had positioned himself for a strong finish before the race changed late. A caution for Kyle Larson altered the flow of the closing laps, and Wallace came to pit road for his final stop with a chance to stay in the fight. He took four tires, came off pit road ninth and then lost the track position he needed when the speeding call hit. Wallace said he pushed the limits too far on pit entry, and that mistake turned a front-running run into a result that left him searching for his first win of 2026. The finish also extended a winless stretch that dates to the 2025 Brickyard 400, a reminder that the speed was there but the execution was not at the end.

Denike review process

Charles Denike said 23XI Racing will treat the mistake as a group issue and go back through the details before the next race. The crew chief said the No. 23 team will review its decisions, communication and preparation, all areas that matter when a pit stop can decide the race in a matter of seconds. Denike also pointed to Phoenix Raceway’s curved pit road as a real challenge, saying speed, positioning and visibility make it difficult to get everything right at once. That kind of explanation fits the way Wallace’s afternoon unfolded. He spent much of the race at the front and still left with a finish that did not reflect how strong the car looked for long stretches. Denike said the team has already identified details it needs to handle better in the future, and that kind of self-scouting matters as 23XI Racing moves toward Talladega Superspeedway. Wallace and the organization now have a clear target, regroup, clean up the mistakes and try to turn pace into a result that lasts through the final stop.

Reddick victory relieves 23XI Racing

Tyler Reddick gave 23XI Racing the win it wanted at Phoenix, and he did it in the same race that cost Wallace a shot at the checkered flag. Reddick won the Freeway Insurance 500 for his sixth victory of 2026, and the Phoenix victory ended a 23-race winless streak. That result gave the team a lift even as Wallace walked away frustrated from his own penalty. Reddick said the goal at Talladega is simple, run a clean race, collect stage points and leave with a solid points day. That message sets up the next stop for 23XI Racing. Reddick has the momentum of a victory. Wallace has the pain of a missed chance, but Corey Heim said Wallace had moved past the speeding penalty that hurt his chance at his first win of 2026. The result leaves 23XI Racing with one driver on top of the podium and another still looking for the breakthrough that slipped away in Arizona.
