Carson Hocevar finished sixth after tow truck helped save Talladega race

Tow truck rescue

Hocevar turned a damaged car and a dangerous-looking setback into a sixth-place finish at Talladega, and he credited a tow truck driver for making it possible. Hocevar said the driver told him, “I am going to keep you in the race,” then moved his No. 77 Chevrolet quickly enough to give Spire Motorsports a chance to work before the final restart. The car made its way from the crash scene to pit road and then to the garage area at about 45 mph, a pace that mattered because every second counted during the red flag. That fast trip gave the team time to change tires and make repairs while Hocevar waited in the garage. Those repairs kept the No. 77 on the lead lap, and that changed the shape of the finish. The sequence gave Hocevar a chance to continue and put himself in position to salvage a strong result from a rough afternoon. He said afterward that he wants to find the tow truck driver and reward him for helping save the race.

Hocevar crash

The run toward that finish started with trouble on lap 183, when a crash with five laps left sent Hocevar behind the wall during a red flag. Hocevar said he was responsible for triggering the wreck after running into Joey Logano’s No. 22 Ford, and that contact set off a chain-reaction crash that also involved Chase Briscoe and Riley Herbst. The incident threatened to end Hocevar’s day in the worst possible way, with the car damaged and the clock winding down. Instead, the tow truck changed the story by getting the No. 77 where it needed to go before the race resumed. The quick response gave the crew a narrow but real window to make the car race-worthy again. Hocevar’s comments made clear that he knew the crash was his fault, and that he also understood how much the towing process mattered once the car was hurt. In a race at Talladega, where track position and timing can disappear in a hurry, the combination of the tow truck driver’s speed and the crew’s work gave Hocevar a chance to continue.

Larson finish

Hocevar rejoined the race in 13th place for the final restart and then drove forward when it mattered most. Over the final two-lap dash, he climbed from 13th to sixth, a move that turned a race-threatening crash into one of the day’s better recoveries. He finished on the lead lap and crossed the line 0.182 seconds behind winner Kyle Larson, a margin that underscored how close the comeback came to being even bigger. The result also left Hocevar 198 points behind Larson in the series standings, a reminder that the race had bigger points implications than just a single finish. Even with that gap, the Talladega run gave Hocevar a reason to talk about the people behind the scenes as much as the driving itself. The tow truck driver’s decision to keep him in the race set up the crew’s repair work, and the repair work set up the late charge. Hocevar still made the final push on track, but the result started with the rescue that got the No. 77 to the garage and back out in time.
