Formula 1 has moved the Bahrain Grand Prix to Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia after the original race date was canceled. The switch sends the series away from Bahrain’s Sakhir track and back to a venue it has not used in nine years. The change ties directly to the conflict in the Middle East. Bahrain is also helping cover much of the cost of staging the race in Malaysia. The race will still carry Bahrain’s name in the official title, and it will be run as the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. That arrangement shifts the action to Sepang, a circuit with Formula 1 history. The move places Malaysia between Azerbaijan and Singapore.
Sepang return
Malaysia last hosted Formula 1 in 2017, when Max Verstappen won the Malaysian race. That result remains the last chapter of the grand prix’s previous run at Sepang. Now the circuit gets a return visit after a long gap. Sepang is expected to bring tropical heat, humidity and thundery showers, with temperatures reaching up to 33C. The return restores a venue that has been absent for nearly a decade.
