George Russell said Mercedes issues marred 14 of 20 weekends in 2026

Russell reflects

Russell said he will take a deep look in the mirror after a frustrating 2026 Formula 1 season that left him with more questions than answers. He and Mercedes found only six clean weekends across the 20-race year, with the other 14 affected by issues. That is the core of the problem Russell now wants to sort through. He said he needs to figure out how much of that disruption came down to bad luck and how much sat within his control. The Mercedes driver did not hide from the scale of the setback. His season ended with three wins, but the way the year unfolded left him searching for a clearer picture of where he stands. Russell also made clear that the review will focus on what was within his control. The numbers point to inconsistency. That balance matters to Russell, because the next step is determining what was within his control before the next one begins.

Mexico City setback

The sharpest blow came in Mexico City, where Russell started from the front row but left with a sixth-place finish after a power-unit electrical issue at the start, a collision with Isack Hadjar and a 10-second penalty. Toto Wolff said Mercedes “let George Russell down” and added that the car had the pace to win in Mexico. The result sent Russell from second to fourth in the overall standings, a swing that summed up how quickly a race can unravel when a weekend turns against a driver. Russell later said he skipped his post-race media duties because of the latest technical setback, not because Kimi Antonelli had already clinched the championship. Mercedes was fined €5,000 after Russell missed those mandatory duties. The sequence in Mexico City carried extra weight because it came after Russell had put himself in position to score heavily. Instead, the weekend became another example of how the season kept slipping away. Russell later wrote on Instagram that 2026 had more bad days than good and was not meant to be his year. Even so, he congratulated Antonelli on the title and said he would keep pushing.

Russell season

Russell’s year ended with him fourth in the standings on 250 points, 11 behind Max Verstappen and nine behind Lewis Hamilton. He won three races in 2026, but Antonelli won nine. That gap tells the story of a season in which Russell won races but did not match Antonelli’s consistency. Martin Brundle said Russell has not matched Antonelli’s consistent pace over race stints and needs an “overdrive” to challenge again. That view reflects the challenge facing Russell going forward. He has the speed to win races and the results to stay near the front, but the season also exposed how expensive technical failures and other setbacks can be over a long championship. Russell’s own response has been direct. He knows the year fell short of his standard. He also knows the fix will require more than frustration. For Russell, the task now is to separate circumstance from execution, then turn that review into improvement.
