Goodyear Reuses Kansas Tire Setups for Cup, Trucks

Goodyear will use the same intermediate oval tire setup used in the spring at Kansas for the NASCAR Cup Series Chase race at Kansas Speedway, giving teams a familiar package on a track that had already produced plenty of notes. Cup Series teams will run the same left-side and right-side tires they used at Kansas in the spring, and the right-side tire Goodyear introduced at Kansas last fall will return for the third time at the track. It had been used eight times overall during the season, a detail that gives the garage another layer of reference data before the weekend begins. Goodyear NASCAR product manager Rick Heinrich said that right-side tire gave teams different strategy options, and he pointed to the recent use of the setup at the Southern 500 at Darlington and at Indianapolis as a reason teams will arrive with more information than they had before. Both series will use Goodyear Racing Eagle tire setups at Kansas Speedway, keeping the focus on a package that had already been through multiple tests in live race conditions.
Cup Series tires
The Cup Series side of the weekend centered on continuity. Cup teams will also have 11 sets of tires for the weekend, which gives them a larger working supply than the Truck Series field. That allotment fits the scale of a Cup weekend and gives teams room to adjust as the race moves forward.
Truck Series setup
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will use a different but still familiar tire setup for its Kansas race, one that had already run at Texas and Michigan. Goodyear will pair that package with inner liners, and the company said inner liners are standard at tracks one mile and longer. The Truck race at Kansas will be the second race of its Chase, so the weekend will carry added weight in the series’ playoff picture. Truck teams will have five sets of tires for the weekend, which puts a tighter limit on how many options they can work through compared with the Cup field. Even with that smaller allotment, the series will still use a package with prior mileage at other tracks, so the teams can draw on what they had already seen at Texas and Michigan.
