Gravel wins at Williams Grove
David Gravel won Friday’s 25-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car feature at Williams Grove Speedway in the National Open prelim, and the result snapped an 18-race winless streak. He started from the pole, lost the lead early to Justin Whittall, then worked back to the front in lapped traffic before holding off Anthony Macri to seal the victory. Gravel recovered after the early setback and held the lead to the checkered flag, opening National Open weekend with the win.
Gravel’s season numbers
The win was Gravel’s 11th of the season, his 130th career World of Outlaws victory and his 12th at Williams Grove. Williams Grove had been a productive stop for Gravel, and the result added to his career total. Gravel also left with a 128-point lead over Buddy Kofoid in the World of Outlaws championship chase. Eleven wins and 130 career World of Outlaws victories put the Williams Grove result in the context of his season and career.
National Open weekend
Macri finished second in his second race back from injury. Justin Peck placed third, Buddy Kofoid took fourth and Chase Dietz finished fifth. The result set the stage for Saturday’s $75,000 National Open, with the World of Outlaws holding a 5-2 advantage over the Pennsylvania Posse entering the event. The National Open was next on the Williams Grove schedule.
