Fabio Di Giannantonio was still dealing with pain from the first-lap Sprint crash at Motegi, where Alex Marquez braked too late at turn three and took out Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta. He was taken to the medical center, where checks found no serious injury, but he said the hit landed hard on his right ribs and left him badly shaken. Marquez later apologized and received two long-lap penalties for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, while Di Giannantonio said he was focused on what he could control and planned physical therapy to recover from the shock.
The effects lingered into Sunday, when Di Giannantonio said he was struggling to ride normally and had trouble moving freely on his right side. He said the pain was especially severe in his ribs, describing it as feeling like a knife in his ribs, and said his hip made it hard to get into a natural position on the bike. He called the day at Motegi complicated and said he had difficulty doing the normal things.
Di Giannantonio started sixth on the grid but finished 18th, and said he expected to feel better after sleeping but the pain had not eased enough. He now faces a race against time to recover for the Indonesia Grand Prix at Mandalika the following week, a weekend he said was especially important because it is the home race for sponsor Pertamina.
