Rule change closes Jerez loophole after Marquez’s pit switch
MotoGP has enacted new pit-lane entry rules to close a loophole exposed by Marc Márquez’s rain-affected Jerez sprint in April. Márquez crashed at the final corner of the sprint, cut across grass and the pit-entry white lines to reach the pit lane, switched to a wet-setup Ducati and went on to win the sprint without receiving a penalty. Race Direction had issued interim clarifying guidance ahead of the French Grand Prix at Le Mans, and the formal wording was aligned with Race Direction protocol.
The revised rule requires all pit-lane entries and exits to use the designated entry and exit point and the route defined by the broken white line and the official pit-lane access road, and it mandates that riders cross the official pit-lane entry timing point when entering or exiting. The regulation explicitly forbids crossing the solid white lines at pit entry and exit. Stewards are empowered to penalize riders who fail to cross the broken line, do not use the pit-lane entry road in its entirety, or miss the timing point. MotoGP said the change is intended to close the Jerez loophole, restore fairness in pit procedures and provide clearer, enforceable guidance to teams, riders and officials moving forward.
Bezzecchi taken to hospital after violent Assen crash
Marco Bezzecchi was taken to hospital for further evaluation after a violent crash during the MotoGP Dutch Grand Prix at Assen. The Aprilia rider lost the front at Turn 15 while battling Marc Marquez for a podium place, was launched into the gravel, barrel-rolled to a stop near the barriers and was treated first at the circuit medical center before being transferred to Groningen Hospital for more scans. Doctors said he was conscious, had normal movement in all four limbs and showed no signs of major neurological or systemic complications, but he was in severe pain and needed tests to rule out hidden injuries.
Bezzecchi had started the race from the front row in third place but lost positions on the opening lap before the crash. Reports varied on whether the fall came on lap two or lap three, but all accounts placed it at Turn 15 in a high-speed incident that drew immediate medical concern.
The crash also ended Bezzecchi’s lead in the 2026 MotoGP championship. After the Dutch Grand Prix, he stood second in the standings, seven points behind Jorge Martin, who finished third at Assen. The result marked Bezzecchi’s third consecutive points-free race during a difficult June in which he had already lost the championship lead.
Michelin carcass switch hinders Razgatlioglu at COTA
Toprak Razgatlioglu’s adaptation to the Yamaha M1 has been hampered by rear-tyre issues; he called the Michelin tyres the “real problem” slowing his switch from World Superbikes, highlighting rear grip and acceleration as his main challenges after Brazil. He said the M1’s greater power, aerodynamics and electronics make familiar tracks feel different. Razgatlioglu has improved since Thailand but is still searching for a narrow performance window on the rear tyre and warned that Michelin’s use of a stiffer carcass in Thailand and Brazil, and the planned reversion to the standard carcass for the US GP at COTA, will complicate his learning. Tyre management and suspension/setup choices will be central at Austin, where bumps and a physical first sector may require a softer setup to protect rear grip.
Results in the opening rounds underlined those difficulties: Razgatlioglu failed to score points in Thailand and Brazil, with best race finishes of 17th in both grands prix. He crashed in the Buriram sprint, finished 18th in the Goiânia sprint and was 17th in the Brazilian GP after reaching Q2 and qualifying 12th. He said the sequence of results left him “really down” after Saturday in Brazil. Razgatlioglu has prior experience at COTA — he first raced the circuit in the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2013 and rode it last year on BMW’s M1000RR — but he said the M1 changes how the track feels.
Support staff and industry figures say the start is technically understandable and that he is improving. Coach Sylvain Guintoli said Razgatlioglu was “getting the hang of” the Yamaha M1 after pre-qualifying at COTA: Razgatlioglu posted a 2:02.373 lap to finish 18th overall and was the third-fastest Yamaha behind Fabio Quartararo and Jack Miller, while Ducati’s Marc Márquez topped the session with a 2:00.927. Guintoli pointed to Friday race simulations as evidence Razgatlioglu is learning to manage throttle inputs, “hook the bike up” and improve traction, while stressing that track temperature and overall tyre grip remain key variables. Ducati test rider Michele Pirro said Razgatlioglu’s difficult start “makes me smile,” noting the switch to the V4 YZR‑M1 requires learning ride‑height devices, increased aerodynamics and running Michelins instead of Pirellis. Pirro warned that being seven to eight tenths off the pace effectively places a rider at the back and that gains often come in small fractions — sometimes half a tenth per corner — but expressed confidence Razgatlioglu can improve as he gains experience with the bike, the Michelin tyres and MotoGP fine‑tuning.
Bezzecchi Suspended From Czech GP After Marshal Incident
Marco Bezzecchi was suspended from Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix after MotoGP stewards ruled that his conduct during Saturday’s sprint in Brno breached championship regulations and was prejudicial to the interests of the sport. The penalty ended his weekend before the main race.
The incident came after Bezzecchi crashed at Turn 3 while running fifth with fewer than two laps left in the sprint. Marshals were recovering his Aprilia from the gravel when, according to stewards, one marshal may have accidentally twisted the throttle and revved the bike. Stewards said Bezzecchi pushed marshals who were trying to move the motorcycle, and video showed him pushing and slapping a marshal. MotoGP held a stewards hearing on Saturday night and upheld the suspension, while Aprilia said it retained the right to appeal.
Bezzecchi entered Sunday leading Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin by 15 points, after the sprint added five points for Martin. Martin was also set to serve two long-lap penalties from the Balaton Park incident. Bezzecchi said he could not explain why he has been more competitive in Sunday races than in sprint races, noting four wins in eight Sunday races this season but only two sprint podiums and four sprint DNFs.
