Doohan at Jerez
Jack Doohan took another step toward a full-time Haas Formula 1 seat for the 2027 season when he completed his first run in a Haas car at Jerez. The test came during a Testing of Previous Cars session, and Doohan drove Haas’s 2026 VF-25 in what marked his first Formula 1 outing since his stint with Alpine ended after the Miami Grand Prix. He shared the day with Ryo Hirakawa and Sho Tsuboi, putting him back in a Formula 1 cockpit and keeping him in consideration for the Haas seat. Doohan joined Haas as a test and reserve driver ahead of the 2026 season.
Doohan also made clear he valued the chance to get back in the car, thanking Haas on social media after the run and calling the experience an incredible feeling. The outing kept him in the group of candidates Haas is considering for 2027.
Haas 2027 plan
Haas has no 2027 driver decision yet, and team principal Ayao Komatsu has made the selection process clear. Performance will drive the choice first. Affiliations and sponsorships only enter the discussion if candidates are very close. Komatsu has also said no decision is expected soon, which keeps the field open and gives every contender more time to make a case.
That framework gives Doohan a chance, but it also sharpens the pressure around the other candidates. Haas is evaluating talent rather than handing out promises, and Komatsu’s comments point to a decision made on what drivers do on track rather than on who brings the biggest external package.
Camara and Fornaroli
Doohan is not alone in the race for the Haas seat. Ferrari junior Rafael Camara and McLaren reserve Leonardo Fornaroli are also in the running, and both took part in Haas TPC evaluations earlier this year. Camara made the strongest impression in the team’s earlier Portugal test, giving Haas another benchmark for its 2027 candidates. Fornaroli remains part of the conversation as well.
The Jerez run does not settle anything, but it keeps Doohan in consideration alongside Camara and Fornaroli. Haas now has three candidates to assess as it weighs the track work each driver has already put in.
