Johnson uses low groove to win Perris in Petty Performance No. 1P

R.J. Johnson of Laveen, Arizona drove to victory in the 30-lap "Salute to Indy" main at Perris Auto Speedway, starting sixth in the Petty Performance Racing #1P Avanti Windows & Doors/Apache Transport Sherman and using the low groove to take the lead. The win was the third of the season for the two-time defending Avanti Windows & Doors USAC CRA Sprint Car champion and the 14th of his career. Johnson also set fast time with a 16.677-second lap, earning his sixth Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award of the season and the 20th of his career, and he picked up the Hard Charger/Best Passing Job honors as well.

The 14-car race featured two distinct grooves and produced five lead changes, including a charge from fifth by Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm in Dino Napier's No. 5x Indiana Truck Salvage / B&B Powder Coating Maxim, working the top side until his engine expired with five laps to go. Behind Johnson, Brody Roa finished second, Eddie Tafoya Jr. third, Cole Wakim fourth, and Austin Williams fifth. The USAC CRA Sprint Car series returns to action June 6 at Santa Maria Speedway for "Equipment Share Night."
